PUBLIC PERFORMANCE-INSTALLATION
2015- Look Out- Mercer University, Tattnall Square park, Macon Georgia, five-month installation of a site specific temporary public sculpture created for the “art in the park” exhibition funded by a Knight Neighborhood Challenge Grant. Inspired by southern ideology, namely the absurdity that plays into the imagery of the American southern male or “redneck” in popular lexicon. The work created for the outdoor sculpture park, is a reinterpretation of a hunt stand. Combining motifs featured in tripod stands, jungle gyms, and hunt camps, the work features a ten-foot tall steel tripod structure in which a mock trailer sits on top off. This absurd structure is a critique of the ideas on“conservation” and “balance” placed on the natural ecosystems, defining what can be understood as a second colonial expansion perpetuated through suburban sprawl and commercial gain.
2015- Minute Dimensions, Zero Compensation, Everglades, Florida. The world’s smallest airboat was fabrication out of scrap parts and a lawnmower engine, creating an icon of the cultural absurd paradise I was raised in. Aboard this vessel I lead an expedition through the charted “wilds” of the Florida Everglades, crossing through the thickest portion of the marshland, to reach Miami. In channeling this performative “Don Quixote-esque” persona, this absurd exploration of the Everglades was examined through a self-critical lens, embracing both the introspection and inspiration such ludicrous notions of unrestrained masculinity entail.
2014 North beach Trophy Shop- SELECT Miami, North Miami Beach Florida. In partnership with SELECT, Under the handle Bauhelm Enterprises the scientist/artist team Michael J. Bauman and Kate Helms presented the site specific installation North Beach Trophy Shop during Art Basel Miami week.
North Beach Trophy Shop was inspired by the wunderkammer, carnivalesque lighting, and notions of bionic paradise creating an installation that offered brilliantly colored, highly detailed silicone replicas of alligator hides out of a custom-fabricated 5’x10’ trailer, transforming an outdoor location into a hotspot for tropical revelry.
2013 In Search of Cata- Shannon River and surrounding area, Limerick, Ireland
Site Specific Project-Over the course of six days a boat was constructed from salvaged materials, and an expedition to find and conquer the river monster Cata was planed and executed. The expedition down the Shannon River found no evidence of the monster and ended with the unforeseen capsizing and sinking of the expedition boat by the Shannon River.
2013 Tamiami 1 East- Everglades National Park, Miami-Dade County, FL
Site Specific Project- 33 alligator raft toys were inflated adjacent to the L-29 Canal, tied into taut bundles, and carried southwards across State Road 90 (Tamiami Trail) into Everglades National Park, mimicking an assisted wildlife crossing. The floats were released among the pond apple forest, only to be retrieved shortly thereafter, deflated, and stored for future interventions.
